Custom suits for Washington DC professionals, fitted at our showroom in Tysons Corner – about 25 minutes from downtown DC by car, two stops past East Falls Church on the Silver Line. We have outfitted DC attorneys, executives, lobbyists, and federal employees since 1969. Suits are cut to 49 individual measurements, built on a half-canvas floor, and finished by hand. Nothing we make is fused.
Custom Suits Built for Washington DC Dress Codes
Washington has a particular relationship with a suit. The garment carries the work – court appearances, client meetings, hearings on the Hill, dinners with foreign delegations, the long Tuesday at the agency that ends with a reception you did not plan for. The DC suit has to read seriously, sit comfortably for ten hours, and never be the thing in the room that draws attention away from the work.
That is the brief we have been working against for fifty-five years. Our clients in DC tend toward darker worsteds, conservative widths, restrained linings, and trousers cut to be sat in. Detailing is intentional rather than decorative – a working buttonhole on the cuff, a pick-stitched lapel only when it suits the occasion, a half-lined jacket for the long hot summer between Memorial Day and the first October cold front.
Why Custom Beats Off-the-Rack for DC Professionals
Off-the-rack is built to a fictitious average body. For someone who lifts, runs, sits behind a bench all day, or has had a shoulder rebuilt, the average never quite fits. Standard alterations move a button, take in a waist, shorten a sleeve. They cannot rebalance a jacket whose chest was cut for a different proportion.
A custom suit at The Tailored Man begins with a 60-minute consultation and 49 individual measurements. We talk through your work, your travel, the specific events the suit needs to do well at, and the rest of your wardrobe. We watch how you stand, how your shoulders rest, how the trouser actually breaks on the shoe you are most likely to wear with it. Then the suit is built for that specific picture.
The other reason custom wins for DC clients is the depth of fabric. A Washington wardrobe in 2026 needs cloth for the August oral argument, the December black-tie dinner, and the spring board meeting in San Francisco. We carry that range – from 7-ounce tropical wool in worsted high-twist for the worst of the humidity, to mid-weight Loro Piana cashmere blends, to flannel in the 11- to 13-ounce range for January.
Pricing
Pricing scales with two choices: fabric and construction.
The Iniziare collection – from $895. Half-canvas construction is the floor; we make no fused garments. Same 49 measurements, same fittings, same tailors as the higher tiers.
Premium fabrics – from $1,295. Cloth from Loro Piana, Holland & Sherry, Ermenegildo Zegna, Scabal, Dormeuil, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Marzoni, Reda, Drago, and Stylbiella. This is where most DC clients land for the suit they will wear most.
Handmade Collection – from $3,200. Top-tier mills paired with the highest construction grade we offer.
Construction upgrades, on top of the fabric you choose: full canvas at +$200, fully handmade at +$350, our Presidential tier at +$500 to $750. Tuxedos start at $1,095.
A complete answer to “what will my suit cost” is a five-minute conversation in the showroom. Bring the occasion, the budget, and the timeline.
Fabric Options for the Washington Calendar
The local climate writes the wardrobe. From early June into mid-September, Washington is on the wrong side of any wool over 9 ounces; we pull tropical worsteds, high-twist openweaves, and linen-silk blends from the mills, often woven in Italy specifically for hot-humid markets. From October through early March, the wardrobe leans on flannels, cavalry twills, and the heavier worsteds from the British and Italian houses. The two transition months get four-season cloth in the 9- to 11-ounce range, which is the workhorse weight most DC professionals own most of.
For court-facing or hearing-room wear, charcoal and navy worsteds in plain weave or fine herringbone remain the safest reads. For the wider professional calendar – investor meetings, fundraisers, off-camera press – we will recommend a slightly more textured cloth or a softer construction.
Getting from DC to Tysons
Our showroom is at 1750 Tysons Boulevard, in the Tysons Corner commercial district. Most DC clients drive – it is roughly 25 minutes from downtown via I-66 and the Dulles Toll Road, and parking is on-site at the building. The Tysons Corner Metro station (Silver Line, just five stops past Foggy Bottom) is a short walk away if you prefer to read on the way.
We schedule first appointments to run about an hour. Final fittings are typically 20 to 30 minutes. Most DC clients schedule fittings after work or on Saturdays; we are open Saturday 10am to 4pm specifically because that is when many clients prefer to be seen.
Client Patterns We See in DC
The most common first order from a DC client is a navy worsted in 10-ounce four-season, half-canvas, with a pair of matched trousers in a mid-grey to extend the wardrobe. The second order, six to twelve months later, is usually a charcoal or a darker grey worsted at a higher fabric tier – Loro Piana or Holland & Sherry – and a softer-shouldered sport coat in a cashmere blend for the kind of dinner where a tie is optional.
By the third or fourth order, our DC clients are typically branching into a tuxedo or dinner jacket, sometimes a second pair of trousers in the same cloth as a recent suit (good practice when the suit will see hard wear), and a fabric like flannel or a winter cashmere blend for the colder months. Our client stories page captures more of these progressions in our clients’ own words.
Common Questions
Most DC client questions – turnaround time (seven weeks), alterations on garments we did not make (yes, we do them), how to prepare for a first appointment, and what to expect at a final fitting – are answered on our FAQ page.
